This photograph features Radio Birmingham presenter Malcolm Jay, and dates from the mid 1970s.  It was taken in Radio Studio 2 Control Room, which could operate ‘self drive’ or control the actual Studio 2 which is on the left of the picture.  Malcolm used to present a Tuesday night rock music show called ‘Heavy Pressure’

  2. LOOKING AFTER NUMBER ONE…..Heavy Pressure was the programme on which I was able to expand my Radio Birmingham news reporting skills! I obtained the first radio interview in Britain with a then unknown band called The Boomtown Rats from Dublin, who were on tour & appeared in front of a small crowd at the La Fayette club in Wolverhampton (July 20th 1977). Bob Geldof travelled separately from Chessington so thanks to my sister who knew them, I got to talk to the band while they were waiting for the gig. Thanks to Malcolm Jay for recognising their potential and playing their track Lookin’ after No.1 from a new wave compilation album and broadcasting the interview. The only other BBC airtime they got around then was from John Peel, I think.

  10. A blast from the past. Your old stereo electrician. Remember the days of Ozzie, bonhem. Like to get intouch spent last 30 years working in Middle East.
    I will never forget the fair mont falcon you bought. That I had for 2 nights at my house to fit stereo in and head phone sockets.
    Too big for my drive extended over footpath while I was working on it.
    Would love to meet up.

In 1974 I was one of a group of schoolboys from Shire Oak School in Brownhills who were invited by a guy called Roger Thomas (who one evening had lectured to us on media careers) to visit the “Heavy Pressure” set at Pebble Mill. The guest was the wonderful Rick Wakeman. Malcolm was very kind and welcoming, as was Rick, who played music from his about-to-be-released album “Journey to the Centre of the Earth.” It really was a fantastic and utterly memorable experience, and I am still grateful. Thank you.

    Returned to UK in 1993, entered local politics. Former Chairman of East Sussex County Council.
    Finally Retired June 2020
