Specially shot interview with writer David Rudkin, talking about the relative success of the 1974 Play for Today, ‘Penda’s Fen’, made by BBC Pebble Mill. Alan Clarke was the director, David Rose the producer, and Tara Prem the script editor.

Caroline Hawkins left the following message on the Pebble Mill Facebook Group: ‘I remember it. I was in it. I was the little girl who had her hands chopped off and my mother was the costume designer (who persuaded me to do it!)’.

Specially shot interview with writer, David Rudkin, talking about working with director, Alan Clarke, on the 1974 Play for Today, ‘Penda’s Fen’.

‘Penda’s Fen’ was produced at Pebble Mill by David Rose, and script edited by Tara Prem. The film tells the story of Stephen, a troubled 18 year old who rejects the traditional church he was brought up into, in search of an older pagan faith.

Specially shot video with Janice Rider, talking about working as costume designer on the 1989 Pebble Mill drama, ‘Vote for Them’.

It was a 3 part series about the Allied troops in Cairo during the Second World War who decide what sort of world they want after the war and form “parties”, holding debates and elections.

It was filmed on location in both England and Egypt.

It was also the production on which Janice met her husband.

The series was written by David Edgar and Neil Grant. It was produced by Carol Parks, James Ormerod was the director, and Michael Wearing the executive producer. Nigel Jones was the production designer.

Empire Road – Janice Rider

Video interview with costume designer Janice Rider, about working on the drama series: Empire Road. Empire Road was produced at Pebble Mill by Peter Ansorge and written by Michael Abbensetts. It was the first soap opera in Britain with a black and asian cast, starring Norman Beaton.

Specially shot video with costume designer, Janice Rider talking about the 1987 Pebble Mill drama series: ‘The Ritz’.

The series was written by John Godber, who along with Martin Shardlow, directed it. It was produced by Chris Parr. The comedy drama was set in a newly acquired nightclub in the North of England. It was based on the play, ‘Bouncers’, by John Godber.

The series starrred Richard James Lewis, Paul Rider, Andre Dunn, Andrew Livingstone, and Richard Ridings.

Mary Sanchez: ‘I was secretary to Chris Parr at the time and went along to Libertys nightclub to watch some of the filming. ( my first time on a film set) Mark Addy also starred in it who as you know is v well known now and also andrew dunn . A fun production to be involved in!’
