In this video film editors Greg Miller and Oliver White talk about working with the documentary producer, Philip Donnellan, at BBC Pebble Mill.  They discuss editing ‘Gone for a Solider’ (1980), ‘The Big Hewer’ (1974) and ‘The Fight Game’ (1973).  ‘The Big Hewer’ and ‘The Fight Game’ were adaptations of radio ballads.

Shalom Salaam – Bob Jacobs

‘Shalom Salaam’ was written and directed by Gareth Jones, and produced at Pebble Mill by Chris Parr.  The 1989 series follows the story of  a Jewish boy  (John Cater) and a Muslim girl (Mamta Kaash) who fall in love whilst at college.  Zia Mohyeddin, Charlotte Cornwell and Buki Armstrong also featured.  Bob Jacobs was the 1st Assistant Director.

‘Come to Mecca’ – Bob Jacobs


‘Come to Mecca’ was a series set in Brick Lane which went out in 1983.  It was written by Farrukh Dhondy, directed by John McGrath and produced at Pebble Mill by Peter Ansorge.    The play starred Zia Mohyeddin, Bharti Patel, Atal Patal, Sharman MacDonald, Dinesh Shukla, Nick Stringer, Moti Makan, Paul Anil.

Heart of the Country – Bob Jacobs


In this video 1st A.D. Bob Jacobs talks about working on the 1987 four part drama – ‘Heart of the Country’, produced at Pebble Mill.  Written by Fay Weldon and directed by Brian Farnham, the series follows the social decline of a single mother and her children.   The climax of the action takes place in Glastonbury, during the carnival.  The series was produced by Roger Gregory and starred Jacqueline Tong as Sonia, as well as Christian Bale, Rosalind Bennett and Susan Penhaligon.
