‘Pebble Mill at One’ – Mark Kershaw

The photograph shows Mark Kershaw directing in Gallery C, for a Pebble Mill at One, circa 1984.  Dave Bushell lighting director is at the far end, a Vision Mixer on attachment from Northern Ireland (I forget the name), me and production assistant, Jane Mclean.

Dead Head was a four part thriller produced at Pebble Mill.  It went out between 15th January and 5th February 1986.  It starred Denis Lawson as a minor villain who becomes linked to a gruesome murder, when he discovers a severed head in a hat box he is meant to deliver.

The series was produced by Robin Midgley, directed by Rob Walker and written by Howard Brenton.  Dave Bushell was the lighting director, Vivien Oldham the make-up designer and Kathryn Ayerst the costume designer and Keith Salmon the camera supervisor.  Gavin Davies, shown spraying down a traffic mirror in the photo was the production designer.

The series also featured George Baker, Simon Callow, Peter Attard, Lindsay Duncan and Norman Beaton.

Nativity Blues, was a hosted Pebble Mill drama recorded in Studio A, it was transmitted in 1989, and starred Alfred Molina, Julia Swift, Anna Cropper, John Normington and Trudie Styler (aka Mrs Sting). Directed by Sue Dunderdale and Jeremy Ancock.

It was written by Wendy Macleod.

The play is set two days before Christmas, new father Hank, is not coping well with the new baby or his marriage.

Dave Bushell was the lighting director.

Lizzie’s Pictures, four-part drama series shot in Studio A and on location in Birmingham, Warwickshire and London. Directed by Nick Renton.

Transmitted in 1987. Critically well-received but unfortunately got lost as it was aired alongside ‘Porterhouse Blue’ which was very popular. Starred Lisa Harrow, Robert Stephens, Sheila Ruskin, Philip Jackson and Pam Ferris amongst others. Crew included myself on lighting, Sally Engelbach (designer), Al Barnett  (costume), Gill Hughes (make-up), Dave Doogood (camera supervisor), Dave Baumber (sound) and Ivor Williams (VT editor).

Debut on Two was a series of six dramas produced at Pebble Mill in 1990 for BBC 2, to promote the work of writers new to television.  Two of the dramas were shot on location, the other four were studio based.

Michael Wearing was the executive producer, Vicky Licorish and Philippa Giles the producers, Diana Patrick and Bob Landgon the directors.  A company of established actors including Pete Postlethwaite, Hilary Sesta and Adrian Dunbar, appeared across the six different plays.

The plays in the series were:

  • The Conversion of St Paul
  • Breast is Best
  • The Wake
  • Window of Vulnerability
  • Kingdom Come
  • A Box of Swan
