Pebble Mill had a very active BBC Club.  The Club was not only the focus of socialising and drinking, but also of sporting activity.  Each year there would be a Regional Clubs Day, where members of other BBC Clubs from around England would get together and compete in different sporting events.

‘Beautywise’ was the BBC’s first television series devoted to beauty.  It had a magazine format and was produced at Pebble Mill for BBC 1 Daytime, under Daytime Editor, Stephanie Silk.  The series was presented by beauty journalist, Liz Earle, with reporter Karen Krizanovich.  Celia Marks was S.P, Pam Relton the researcher, with Annette Martin producer/director, and Julia Gray directing.  The production team also included Claire Campbell, production assistant, Gail Herbert and production secretary, Kulvinder Chudge.  The series included studio items and recorded inserts.  The location shoots involved some foreign filming in L.A, as shown in the photos.

The ‘Golden Oldie Picture Show’, was an entertainment series presented and linked by Radio 1 D.J., Dave Lee Travis between 1985-88.  Guest directors would shoot music videos for past hits, which had never had videos made.  It was their chance to interpret a song visually in whatever way they wanted.

These photos are from the video for ‘Sweet’s’ 1973 hit song ‘Little Willy’.  It was recorded in Stratford Upon Avon.  The cameraman is Jim Knights – shown in the photos.  The make up artist checking the tramp is Val Ackrill.

On Her Majesty’s Service – Pilot

‘On Her Majesty’s Service’ was a drama pilot made by John King’s department in 1988, which never went out.  It depicted life in a British army camp during the era of National Service.

Tim Manning, who worked on the pilot added this information: “This was a comedy drama pilot about National Service, which starred Keith Barron. It was lovingly made, involving nearly everyone in John King’s LE team (script by members of it, too), but though a full pilot was commissioned, the series wasn’t. I can’t remember whether it coincided with a change of BBC1 Controller; and you have to bear in mind too that there was fierce competition from London departments for slots for this kind of thing.”

Some of the filming took place on the Severn Valley Railway, as shown in the photos.
