“I attended an interesting talk last week at a Kaleidoscope Event held at Birmingham City University – an interview with my old friend and colleague Chris Phipps, former Radio WM broadcaster and presenter of Look! Hear! and later the booker for bands on The Tube and producer for Zenith North. Lovely to discover his passion for music is undimmed – he has just worked on a documentary about Black Sabbath’s last performance and is publishing a book next year.”

Former Pebble Mill series editor, Steve Weddle has sent out the press release below, about Pebble Mill’s Blue Plaque status:

BLUE PLAQUE FOR PM

Our iconic BBC Pebble Mill has been awarded a Blue Plaque in honour of its unique contribution to broadcasting.

Since a recent coffee morning when Jim Dumighan commented that there wasn’t any indication that Pebble Mill ever existed, ‘not even a Blue Plaque’, Jenny Brewer and Steve Weddle have been campaigning to get our former home recognised.

The Heritage Foundation, who award Blue Plaques to a select few in the field of entertainment have granted this rare honour.

The Blue Plaque will be displayed on the front of a new private hospital about to start construction on the old site, thanks to its owners Circle Health, who have agreed to help us out.

There will be an unveiling ceremony soon after the hospital has been completed in around two years’ time – just enough time to plan a party!!!

The good news also featured on a recent edition of Midlands Today, and the BBC Radio WM and Hereford and Worcestershire breakfast shows.

Malcolm Stent awarded a BEM

Congratulations go to Malcolm Stent, who has been honoured as a ‘Medallist of the Order of the British Empire’ (BEM), in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours (2017). The award is for ‘services to Entertainment and charity in Solihull’.

Malcolm was a presenter on Radio WM, in ‘the Barmaid’s Arms’, alongside Mary Kendall (Rosie), he also presented ‘Folk Scene’. In addition, he used to do audience warm-up for Pebble Mill at One.

Malcolm is still very active on the stage, writing and appearing in pantomimes particularly in Solihull.

Pete Simpkin: ‘I worked with Malc so much on his radio adventures and feel so proud of him achieving this honour . He has worked….sometimes too much…. but always with love and dedication to the people around him. the lad from Saltley off to Buck House!! Great news!!’

BBC Radio Birmingham presenters Pete Simpkin and Richard Jeffs, with BBC WM presenter Danny Kelly, live from Sutton Park this morning [4th August 2016] with memories of the summer of 1976.

The following comment was left on the Pebble Mill Facebook page:

Colin Pierpoint: ‘I remember the hot summer of 1976, the Pebble Mill front lawn turned brown. The government appointed a minister for drought; the BBC followed him making live statements on the television news, and everywhere he went it rained!’
